How To Remove Burn Marks From Carpet
Looking For The Best Way To Get Burn Marks Out of Your Carpet?
We have all had those days where we’re frantically running around trying to get everything done at once. As you reach for your cell phone, a hot iron, cigarette, or hot hair straightener comes crashing down right on top of your carpet—yikes! No matter how big or small, a burn mark is always visible (and extremely unsightly). Before you hastily rush out the door to replace your carpet, here are some useful tips on how to remove burn marks from carpet.
Inspect the Damage
The first thing you will need to do is to examine the amount of the damage to your carpet. More than likely, there will be a dark scorch mark and some fibres will have melted. If your carpet is made from natural fibers, they will simply turn to fine dust upon burning. Synthetic fibers will, however, melt together and form lumps.
Trim the Burned Area
Clip the burned fibres off the carpet with a pair of scissors or a razor blade. For natural carpet fibres, use a metal fork to gently scrape over the burned area. This will not only remove the black dust, but also make the mark less visible.
Use a Cleaning Solution
Next, you will need to make a liquid solution to help clean the burn mark. Combine five parts water with one part hydrogen peroxide. Then, apply a liberal amount of the solution to the burned area. Using some steel wool or some sandpaper, scrub the burned mark, and then vacuum the area.
Repair the Damaged Area
With a pair of scissors or a sharp razor, trim the top of some fibres from an inconspicuous area of the carpet, making sure not to cut off too much. Then, apply some rubber cement on the burned mark, and cover the area with the carpet shavings. Put a heavy book on top of the spot and let is sit for a few hours.
Unnecessarily replacing your carpet is going to cost you time and a lot of money. With a little tender loving care and some patience, ugly burn marks on your beautiful carpet can be a thing of the past. Depending on the severity of the burn mark, it might be more than you can handle. If the damage is too far gone, it is probably a good idea to contact a professional carpet cleaner. They have the skills and the proper tools to bring your carpet back to life.
